Exploring Health Care Needs of Children

Hello, I am Nichole Rapids. As a parent of two young children, I am no stranger to the local healthcare clinic. Whenever the kids run a high fever, suffer from ear pain, or exhibit strange symptoms, I bring them into the clinic for an immediate checkup. The kids also receive all of the vaccinations on the given schedule at this clinic. I want to use this site to talk about the healthcare needs of children. I want to share information about procedures performed at the local clinic and reasons to go into the hospital instead. My site will also discuss various situations that necessitate a call to the triage nurse. I hope that my website will help other parents keep their kids healthy from infancy to adulthood.

What To Expect From A Hemorrhoidectomy Surgical Procedure

Do you need a hemorrhoidectomy surgical procedure? While most hemorrhoids heal on their own, some linger, thrombose, or cause extreme discomfort. If your doctor recommends this common surgery, take a look at what you need to know about the procedure and your recovery.

What Is a Hemorrhoidectomy?

As the name implies, this is a surgical procedure used to remove hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that can develop inside the rectum or outside of the anus. While most internal (inside the rectum) hemorrhoids don't cause pain, they can result in some discomfort or bleeding during bowel movements. They may also prolapse, or come out of, the anus.

External hemorrhoids often cause pain, itching, bleeding, and swelling. Even though there are over the counter and prescription medical treatments for both types (internal and external), surgical intervention allows the doctor to tie off the swollen vein (which prevents bleeding) and remove the hemorrhoids completely.

Is Anesthesia Necessary?

Patient comfort is important to your surgeon and the entire medical team. While this is typically a same-day surgery (meaning you'll go home that day), you will receive medication to sleep through the procedure. This means you'll need to bring an adult licensed driver to drive and accompany you home.

Even though you will need to wait for the anesthesia to wear off before you leave, the medical staff cannot allow you to drive home. The anesthesia can make you groggy or confused post-surgery. You should plan on resting for the remainder of the day and do not drive a vehicle or make any important decisions until the doctor allows you to do so.

What Is the Post-Surgery Recovery Like?

Some patients experience pain or discomfort after this procedure. Your doctor may prescribe pain medications or recommend over the counter options. Along with discomfort, you may also have some bleeding.

Stool softeners, ice packs, and sitz baths can help to reduce discomfort—especially during or after bowel movements. The doctor may also suggest a bland or low fiber diet for the first few days after surgery. Avoid high-fat, greasy, fibrous, or heavy foods during this time.

Can Hemorrhoids Return?

Hemorrhoid removal surgery isn't a cure. While the doctor may remove a hemorrhoid, you can still develop others. After you heal from the surgery, eat a high-fiber diet, drink plenty of water, and get daily exercise to reduce the risk of a recurrence. If you have an office job or sit for long periods of time, take breaks, stand up, and walk around the room/space to help prevent future hemorrhoids.
